Michelangelo Merisi, also Michael Angelo Merigi, Caravaggio for short after his parents' place of origin (Caravaggio in Lombardy) was an important Italian painter of the early Baroque period. Caravaggio was characterized by his innovative and realistic image design. Especially in his treatment of Christian themes, he broke new ground by combining the sacred with the profane.
