Franz Carl Spitzweg was a German late romantic and Biedermeier painter and draftsman. He created over 1,500 pictures and drawings. From 1824 he began painting with oil paints. During his lifetime, Spitzweg was able to sell around four hundred paintings. He found admirers and buyers primarily among the citizens who had gained new purchasing power, although the popularity that Spitzweg's paintings enjoy today only began after the Second World War.
