The Italian painter Francesco Hayez, who lived between the Napoleonic era and the Risorgimento, is considered the most emblematic representative of Romantic painting. He was famous as an excellent portrait painter and for his paintings with a medieval setting but patriotic symbolism, such as the famous The Kiss. He held the chair of painting at the Brera Academy.
